The solution does not make literal sense (I have a jar of nacho cheese in my downstairs refrigerator that I very much own), but it surprises us with its wordplay. But because the answer is nacho cheese-the word “nacho” sounds like “not your”-we are surprised. ![]() What do you call cheese that is not yours? There are a variety of answers to this question: feta in the supermarket, parmesan in a restaurant pantry, string cheese in Amber Jacobson’s lunchbox that she refuses to share. Jokes, at their core, are based on subversion. So why, exactly, is our “Piece of bread falling over”-enjoying humor broken? Often it was captioned with, “If you laugh at this, your humor is broken.” I would comeĪcross the clip on social media several times afterward. “I’m not sure how to explain to my parents what I’m laughing at” and “Why, just why am I laughing so hard?” were two of the comments bestowed with thousands of likes-a reliable measure of ubiquity. (I must recommend you watch the video with sound, if you watch it at all-the GIF format does not do it justice.) I couldn’t figure out why the scene had this effect on me, but as I scrolled through the comments, I learned I wasn’t alone. When I first watched the bread slice’s unceremonious demise, I was unable to contain my giggles. The clip I’ve just described to you appeared on my Instagram feed a few months ago. It falls face first onto the counter with a muffled thud. But no, it keeps tipping, nosediving faster and faster and faster until… BAM. It begins to wobble so slowly that you’re sure your eyes are playing tricks on ![]() And then: the top of the bread slice gives you a tiny, almost imperceptible nod. Briefly you wonder if you’ve clicked on a still image instead of a video. Proud and defiant, the glutenous giant shows no signs of toppling. You watch as a thick slice of bread stands upright atop a kitchen counter. ![]()
